A Study on the Language Center’s Efforts to Facilitate Students in Improving their Speaking Proficiency at Modern Islamic Boarding School of Darul Hikmah Tawangsari Tulungagung. Sarjana Thesis. Keywords: Language Center’s efforts, LAC, CLI, speaking proficiency English is treated as foreign language in Indonesia. This foreign language has been learnt as compulsory subject both in the formal and informal schools. In term of teaching and learning English, Modern Islamic Boarding School of Darul Hikmah Tawangsari Tulungagung has successful enough in applying the second language. In the institution, the existence of Language Center is crucial considering that has responsibility to develop the students’ improvement concerning with language. As the language unit, Language Advisory Council (LAC) and Center Language Improvement (CLI) offer efforts or policies to facilitate the students to learn English intensively. Appropriate efforts in terms of real practices are necessary for supporting students to be able to use English orally. Consequently, the efforts employed by Language Center plays crucial role to produce learners who are competent in language mastery, especially in speaking. The formulations of the research problem in this research were: 1) What efforts are taken by Language Advisory Council (LAC) to facilitate students in improving their speaking proficiency at Modern Islamic Boarding School of Darul Hikmah Tawangsari?; 2) What efforts are taken by Center Language Improvement (CLI) in facilitating the students to improve their speaking proficiency at Modern Islamic Boarding School of Darul Hikmah Tawangsari? The purposes of this research were: 1) to find out the efforts taken by Language Advisory Council (LAC) to facilitate the students in improving their speaking proficiency at Modern Islamic Boarding School of Darul Hikmah Tawangsari; 2) to find out the efforts taken by Center Language Improvement (CLI) in facilitating the students to improve their speaking proficiency at Modern Islamic Boarding School of Darul Hikmah Tawangsari. The research design of this study was descriptive design with qualitative approach. Data source of this research were the head of LAC, English teachers, CLI member, and students. The data in this study were obtained by conducting in-depth interview, doing non-participant observation, making field notes and documentation. Data analysis was inductive analysis method covering data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion or interpretation. To check the trustworthiness of data, the researcher used data sources and methodological triangulation in this study. In term of using data sources triangulation, the researcher obtained data in each research question from some sources or subjects. Meanwhile, the researcher also collected data using more than one method in every research question to be methodological triangulated. The finding showed that there were various efforts taken by Language Center in facilitating students to improve their speaking proficiency. The efforts of LAC to support the students’ speaking proficiency were reflected in (1) setting goal, (2) proposing English program practices (3) controlling and guiding students’ learning, (4) giving model of using English, and (5) improving students’ motivation. Meanwhile, the CLI’s efforts were in the forms of (1) proposing meaningful activities which classified based on the time series, (2) proposing speaking club, and (3) improving students’ motivation by giving reward and punishment. Furthermore, some efforts taken by the Language Center gave worthy contributions toward students’ improvement on speaking proficiency. By setting the goal, the students are able to know the objective of their speaking learning so that they understand how their ability can be improved well. Proposing English program practices and speaking club gave contribution to the students in which they are able to practice speaking in some daily activities. In addition, the efforts of controlling and guiding the students’ learning, giving model of using English and improving motivation contributed to the students’ participation, so that they had model how language should be practiced. In short, the whole efforts gave big impacts to produce learners who are competent in English speaking.
