Abstract

Language is an important thing used by humans in the world to communicate. Communication is used in various ways. Every activity requires communication. One of the activities that require communication is presentation. Oral presentations are more than just reading a paper or presenting slides to an audience. The skills of how to construct the audience to pay attention and communicate ideas are more necessary to build a good situation in making presentations. Therefore, in this study, the researcher wants to know how students deliver their presentations using rhetorical pattern theory. The research problems in this study are: (1) What is the common rhetoric pattern that use for students’ presentation? (2) What are the rhetorical pattern that used student in doing presentation? The objectives of this study were: (1) To know the students rhetoric pattern of sixth semester English Department in doing presentation. (2) To know the rhetorical pattern mostly of students in doing presentation. The research design used is a discourse analysis research design. Questions are investigated through discourse analysis that focuses on verbal interaction and dialog, and data collection strategies focus on re-recording or text, audio, or video. The population of this study is sixth semester students of UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. From the data obtained from the research results, the rhetorical pattern most often used by students is process analysis 18 times, then argumentation 5 times, illustration 4 times, cause and effect appeared 3 times, cause and effect appeared twice, and narration appeared twice, and the last is description appeared once. The pattern most used by students is the process analysis pattern because it explains how to do something (so your readers can do it) or how something works (so your readers can understand it).
