Abstract

ABSTRACT Aziz, Moh. Lutfi. Student Registered Number.3213113108.2015. The effectiveness of using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Technique towards students’ Achievement in speaking of The Eight Graders at MTs N Ngantru Tulungagung. SarjanaThesis. English Education Departement. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute(IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, S.S, M.Pd Keywords: Effectiveness, speaking, Numbered Heads Together (NHT) technique Speaking is one of language skill that has to be mastered by students besides listening, reading, and writing. It is the macro-skills of language that concerns on the abilities to carry out spoken communication, such as conversation, dialogue, monologue. It is one skill that have to be mastered by students in order to achieve learning objective which appropriate with standard comptence and basic competence in school based curriculum. One of technique that can be used in teaching speaking is Numbered Heads Together (NHT) technique. This technique ensure all students in a group share their ideas. Here, the students are given number from 1-5 and each groups is given a topic. They are given time to discuss the topic. Thus, the researcher asks the question related to the topic given and calls out a number randomly. The students with that number raise their hands, and when called on, the student answers the question. The formulation of the research problem was: (1) how is the students’ achievement in speaking before being taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) technique?, (2) How is the students’ achievement in speaking after being taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) technique?, (3) Is there any significant difference score on students’ speaking before and after being taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) technique? The purpose of this research was: (1) to know the students’ achievement in speaking before being taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) technique, (2) To know the students’ achievement in speaking after being taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) technique, (3) To find out the whether there is significant difference score of students’ speaking before and after being taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) technique Research method:1) the research design in this research is preexperimental, 2) the population of this research was all students of second grade students at MTs N Ngantru Tulungagaung, 3) the sample was VIII D class consisting of 42 students, 4) the research instrument was speaking test, 5) the data analysis was using Paired sample T test of SPSS 6.0 The result showed that the Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000. If Sig. (2-tailed) > 0.05, Null hypothesis (H0) is accepted. Then if Sig. (2-tailed) < 0.05 Alternative hypothesis (Ha ) is accepted. Based on the result of paired sample test, the Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000. It means the significance level is less than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). Based on the result, alternative hypothesis (Ha) that states there is significant difference in students achievement before and after taught by using Numbered Heads Together(NHT) is accepted, while null hypothesis (Ho) that states there is no significant difference in students achievement before and after taught by using Numbered Heads Together(NHT) is rejected. Therefore, Numbered Heads Together(NHT) technique can be used as alternative technique to teach speaking to the students at MTs Level
