Abstract
Speaking is defined as the ability to pronounce and articulate sounds or words to express, and convey thoughts, ideas and feelings. The purpose of learning a language is being able to use it to communicate and interact with others. Speaking is not only about the ability to understand and to be understood, but also the ability to respond to the other person. As students majoring in English, they are required and expected to be proficient in English, especially in speaking. However, there are still many students majoring in English but still have difficulty and lack at some aspects of speaking English. Especially, during class, many of them are still reluctant to speak and often they choose to remain silent when they should have poured their opinions and thoughts. This research leads to exploring students’ difficulties in speaking class at the State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) What are the difficulties faced by the English major students in speaking class? 2) What are the causes of difficulties faced by the English major students in speaking class? 3) How do the English major students overcome the difficulties in speaking class?. The purpose of this study were: 1) To analyze the English major students' difficulties in speaking class 2) To identify the cause of difficulties faced by English major students in speaking class 3) To discover the ways of English major students in overcoming difficulties in speaking class. The research design in this research was a case research with a qualitative approach. The research subjects consisted of ten participants from fourth semester English major students of State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Researcher used observation, and interviews as methods of collecting research data. Data analysis in this research was data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. By collecting the data from various data sources, researcher used data source triangulation to check the validity of the data. The results of this research showed that the English students faces difficulties during speaking class. The difficulties are: (a) Inhibition, (b) Nothing to say or lack of topical knowledge, (c) Low or uneven participation (d) Mother tongue use. Meanwhile, the cause of difficulties are: (a) Grammar, (b) Vocabulary, (c) Fluency, (d) Comprehension. Meanwhile, the strategy used by students are: (a) Speaking in front of a mirror, (b) Create a Vlog, (c) Practice with friends as speaking partners, (d) Watching Youtube, (e) Watching films, (f) Watching podcast, (g) Imitating some conversations from books and games. The conclusion of this research is that speaking during class, English students still experience various kinds of difficulties in their speaking process, which are caused by factors that influenced the success of students' speaking process. As a result, students were not able to carry the speaking activity skillfully during the class.
