Abstract

Grammar is a set of rules that guide how to combine words and phrases to create meaningful expressions. These rules ensure that listeners or readers can understand the speaker or writer clearly. Improving grammar skills is important, and educators need to know how to help students enhance their grammar mastery. The students usually faced challenges in mastering grammar, such as difficulty in arranging words correctly in sentences. These issues could be caused by their unfamiliarity with English language structures. The teachers can help students in mastering grammar by using methods like the Practice Rehearsal Pairs Method. This method involves repeated oral practice of the material that can help students become more familiar with the structure being studied. This study is conducted to improve the students' grammar mastery in simple present tense by using Practice Rehearsal Pair Method. This research was designed to answer the single question "How can the students’ grammar mastery be improved by using Practice Rehearsal Pair Method in X-AK1 at SMKN 1 Bandung??” This study is a classroom action research, aimed at solving students' challenges with grammar mastery. The research was carried out in two cycles: the first cycle consisted of two meetings, while the second had two meetings, including planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. It focused on a class (X-AK1) with a total of 36 students in the 2023/2024 academic year. The research used interviews, tests, and observations as instruments. Then, the data were collected through interviews with the English teacher, observations during teaching and learning, and tests including pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2. The criteria of success for this research were the students achieving a score of 72 or higher on the grammar test, with at least 75% of success rate, and actively participating and showing motivation during the learning process. The results of this study showed that using the practice rehearsal pairs method improved students' grammar skills and encouraged them to be more active and motivated, thereby meeting the success criteria. The results of each cycle showed a real improvement, resulting in a significant increase in students' mastery of grammar in class. Initially, the average score for the pre-test was 61.94, with a success rate of 22.22%. This increased to an average score of 73.89 in the first cycle, which meant an increase in the success rate of 50%. In the second cycle, the average score further rose to 77.78, achieving an 80.55% success rate. The researcher hopes that the English teacher will consider using the Practice Rehearsal Pairs Method as a reference to improve students' grammar mastery of simple present tense. Furthermore, future researchers can use this study as a reference for comparing and conducting further research on methodologies in language teaching.
