Abstract

A new policy called Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) has been implemented in Indonesia for higher education. MBKM encourages students to acquire broad knowledge in accordance with their field of expertise in order to compete at the global level. This policy gives students the freedom to choose courses according to their own interests and desires. The MBKM program also provides opportunities for students to study outside their main study program for 3 semesters, with the aim of expanding their knowledge and skills according to their interests and aspirations. This study aims to evaluate students' understanding of the MBKM program and assess its implementation from the students' perspective. The problem formulations of this research are: 1) How do students perceive the MBKM student exchange program? 2) How do students perceive the contribution of the MBKM student exchange program to their English language development? This study aims to: 1) To find out the perceptions of English students about the existence of the student exchange program in MBKM as well as their considerations in choosing the courses they take for the MBKM program. 2) To find out how students obtain and utilize contributions for the development of their soft skills and hard skills, especially in the development of English language skills.   The research method used is qualitative. The research design used is descriptive design, so that in this study researchers try to tell the solution to existing problems based on data, analyze and interpret objects as they are. The subjects of this study were English Education students at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungangung who participated in the cross-major program in MBKM. Techniques used in data collection through the interview and documentation process. Through the statements of English Education students who participated in the MBKM program, in the aspect of skill development they have greatly developed and gained broad insights and gained new experiences that they had never had before. Although on the other hand, this program does not contribute to the development of their English skills.
