Abstract

We can actually find promise in our surroundings, such as from student to teacher, teacher to student, and so on. However, the utterances that include promises are also found in political events such as the presidential election or the election between governors. As a result, the phenomenon that happened inspired the researcher to conduct research related to promising acts in debate section. Thus, the researcher analyzed the American presidential election debate 2021 related to the promising strategies that were produced by Biden and Trump as participants. The different strategies that they use can be a reference for the lecturer or learner to perform their promise. The research questions of this study are: 1) What strategies are commonly performed by participants of American presidential election debate 2021 in doing promising acts? 2) How are promising acts linguistically realized by participants of American presidential election debate 2021? The objectives of this research are: 1) To know the strategies that commonly performed by Participants of American Presidential Election Debate 2021 in doing promising. 2) To know how promising acts linguistically realized by participants of American presidential election debate 2021 The method of this research conducted by using qualitative research. The participants of this research are the participants of American Presidential Election Debate 2021. The researcher used documentation to collect the data and analyzed by some steps include familiarizing, classifying, and interpreting. This research found there are 31 data categorized as the promising strategy commonly performed by the participants. There are 17 data that categorized as promised future action, 5 utterances categorized as direct promise, 7 utterances categorized as conditional promises, swearing promise are 2 utterances, and the last is self-repetition are 2 utterances.
