Abstract
Keywords: effectiveness, picture series, speaking achievement Picture series is a technique with the use of a form of entertainment that enact a story by images giving the illusion of continuous movement. Series is a group of related things or events. The picture series is expected to be able to help the students in their speaking, especially in story telling. Using this technique in teaching speaking, especially about story telling, it helps students prepare the ideas which uses specific terms or vocabularies well. The formulation of the research problems are: 1) How is students’ speaking achievement before being taught using picture series as media in the teaching speaking? 2) How is students’ speaking achievement after being taught using picture series as media in the teaching speaking ? 3) Is there any significance different scores of the students before and after being taught using picture series as media in the teaching speaking? The purpose of the study are to: 1) Find out the students speaking score before being taught using picture series as media as media in the teaching speaking 2) Find out the students speaking score after being taught using picture series as media 3) Find out significance different score before and after being taught by using picture series as media in the teaching speaking. Research method: 1) The research design is pre- experimental design using quantitative approach, 2) The population of this study are all students of first grade students of SMAN 1 Kampak that consist of 220 students, 3) The sample is students of F class consisting 33 students, 4) The research instrument is test, 5) The technique of data analysis is T- test. T- test is used to know whether Ha is accepted or rejected. The result shows that the total of students’ scores before being taught using picture series as media are 387, while the total score after being taught applying picture series are 501. The T- score is 12,291, whereas T- table with significance level 5% is 2.042. Therefore, T- score is greater than T- table. This means that Ha which states that there is significant effect in using picture series for teaching speaking to the first grade students of SMAN 1 Kampak is accepted. Whereas, Ho, which states that there is no significant effect of applying one,picture series as media is rejected. In other words, picture series as media is effective used as an alternative strategy for teaching speaking to the students at SMAN 1 Kampak.
