Abstract
The existence of English in this digital era cannot be ignored as a foreign language that plays an important role in communication. The formulation of the research problem is: how can the use of describing pictures improve students’ speaking skills at eighth-grade at MTsN 3 Blitar?. The objective of this study is to find out how Describing Pictures is used to improve students' speaking skills in the eighth grade at MTsN 3 Blitar. The research design of this study was a Classroom Action Research model from Kemmis and McTaggart (1988). This research consists of two cycles, each cycle consists of 3 meetings. The subjects of this study were 30 students of eighth-grade B students of MTsN 3 Blitar. This research procedure consists of four stages, including planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The criteria of success used in this study consisted of (1) 75% of the total students reached the minimum completeness criteria of 75 or more, (2) students’ activeness during the learning process was measured by the frequency of asking questions and giving opinions. The research instruments used in this study were observation sheets, interview, questionnaire, and test. The results of this study found that only 5 students (16.66%) were able to pass the Preliminary test with an average score of 61.5. Then, in Cycle 1, 13 students (43.33%) passed the test with an average score of 70.83. In Cycle 2, 26 students (86.66%) achieved the mastery score with an average score of 77. In addition, the percentage of student activeness at the end of Cycle 1 was 54.16%. Meanwhile, at the end of Cycle 2, it increased to 75.83%. So, it can be concluded that describing pictures can improve speaking skills and students’activeness in the classroom.
