Keywords: effectiveness, movie, writing recount text Movie is the one of interesting media that can be used in teaching writing. This media has the characteristic which can be seen and heard at a same time. Through movie, students can built and develop their imagination in writing a good text. Besides, this media can motivate students to learn writing recount text. In this case, the researcher will try to implement movie in teach writing recount text which intent to know how the effectiveness of using movie in improving the tenth grade students’ ability in writing recount text at MAN Trenggalek on academic year 2016/2017. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) how is the students’ ability in writing recount text taught by using movie different from the ones taught without using movie? 2) is there any significant difference in achievement between students who were taught writing recount text by using movie and those who were not? The purpose of this research were: 1) to find out the students’ ability in writing recount text taught by using movie is different from the ones taught without using movie, 2) to know whether there is a significant difference in achievement between students who were taught writing recount text by using movie and those who were taught without using movie. The research method included: 1) the research design used in this research was quasi experimental design with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this research was the tenth grade students of MAN Trenggalek on academic year 2016/2017, 3) the samples were X-2 class as experimental class and X-3 class as control class, which consisting of 64 students, 4) the research instrument which is used to collect the data is test, 5) the researcher uses t-test formula with the helped of SPSS program 16.0 version to analysis the data. The result of this research shows that the students’ mean score of pretest in control class was 72.97 and the mean score of posttest was 75.94. While the students’ mean score of pretest in experimental class was 73.28 and the mean score of posttest was 81.41. The data computation of f-test shows that P-value (Sig) is 0.210, and it is bigger than 0.05 or 5% (0.210 < 0.05). In consequence, the null hypothesis of f-test is not rejected; it means that there is not significant variability (standard deviation) between students who were taught by using movie and those who were not. Then, P-value (Sig) which be gotten from t-test computation with the helped of SPSS program 16.0 version is 0.001, and it is lower than 0.05 or 5% (0.001 < 0.05). This means that the alternative hypothesis (H1) which states that there is significant difference ability between the students who were taught by using movie and those who were taught without using movie is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) which states that there is no significant difference ability between the students who were taught by using movie and those who were taught without using movie is rejected. In other words, movie is the effective media which can be used in teach writing recount text at tenth grade students of MAN Trenggalek on academic year 2016/2017. Hence, movie can be applied by English teacher in teaching and learning activity especially for writing recount text.
