Abstract

Maknun, Alfi Alfafi. Student Registration Number. 126203212132. 2025. The Correlation Between The Use of Google Translate and Students’ Self-Confidence in Translating English Reading Texts at SMAN 1 Sutojayan Blitar. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung.Advisor: Mrs. Arpinda Syifa’a Awalin, M.Pd. Keyword: Correlation, Google Translate, Self-Confidence, Translation The advent of digital technology has significantly transformed the landscape of language acquisition, particularly in English language learning. Among various technological tools, Google Translate has emerged as a widely accessible resource that facilitates understanding and translating English texts efficiently and conveniently. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the use of Google Translate and students’ confidence in their ability to translate English reading texts, as well as their beliefs regarding the tool’s reliability and effectiveness. Given the increasing integration of technological resources in educational settings, it is crucial to examine how learners’ perceptions of such tools influence their translation skills and comprehension. This study examines the relationship between the use of Google Translate and students' self-confidence from the perspective of Bandura's self-efficacy theory, which defines self-efficacy as an individual's belief in their ability to organise and execute actions to achieve desired outcomes. Bandura emphasizes that self-efficacy influences motivation, thought processes, and behavior in specific situations. This research employs a quantitative correlational design. The predictor variable (X) is the extent of Google Translate usage, while the outcome variable (Y) is students’ confidence in translating English reading texts. Using purposive sampling, 100 respondents were selected from a total population of 351 students. Data were collected via questionnaires and documentation and analyzed using SPSS 27.0 with Pearson’s correlation coefficient. The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between Google Translate usage and students’ beliefs about translating English reading materials, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 1 and a significance level of 0.016. This indicates that increased use of Google Translate is associated with stronger students’ self-confidence about translation capabilities. Limitations of this study include the use of purposive sampling, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to a broader population. Additionally, data collection relied solely on self-reported questionnaires, which may introduce subjective bias. Future research employing mixed methods and more representative samples is recommended to strengthen the findings and further explore the role of technology in language learning.
