Abstract
Learning is one of the activities to enrich knowledge. When learning, a strategy will be needed. The use of strategies in learning is needed to achieve a desired goal. Student interest when learning affects the learning process. Learning English as a foreign language is important to learn, especially in English speaking skills. There are three English speaking learning strategies, cognitive, metacognitive, and social/affective. Of the three strategies, the researcher wants to know the strategies that are most often used and least often used by students. This study aims to identify and analyze learning strategies used by MTsN 1 Blitar students to increase their interest in speaking English as a foreign language. Learning interest plays a crucial role in the success of language learning, especially speaking skills. This study uses a descriptive quantitative approach with data collection through questionnaires distributed to 144 eighth-grade of MTsN 1 Blitar who is studying English. This questionnaire measures the use of cognitive, metacognitive, and social-affective learning strategies as strategies used and how they impact students' interest in learning to speak English. The results showed that students of MTsN 1 Blitar had a high interest in learning to speak English, with a percentage of 88.14% categorized as "good". Of the three types of learning strategies, metacognitive strategies were found to be the most frequently used by students (mean score of 3.59), followed by social-affective strategies (mean score of 3.09), and cognitive strategies (mean score of 2.82) which were the least frequently used. These findings indicate that the most students of MTsN 1 Blitar use metacognitive strategies to increase their interest in learning to speak English. Students can monitor themselves so that they know their weaknesses in learning to speak English and what to do if they have these weaknesses. Cognitive strategies are strategies that are rarely used by students to increase their interest in learning to speak English. The method of repeating new vocabulary, finding new vocabulary by themselves makes students feel bored and can also reduce their interest in learning to speak English.
