Abstract
ABSTRACT Winarno, Arip. 2017. Code Switching Performed By The English Lecturer Of Non English Department Students At State Islamic Institute Of Tulungagung. Unpublished Thesis. Undergraduate Program in English Education Department Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung, Advisor Nany Soengkono M.SS, M.Pd Keywords: Code Switching, Non-English Department Students English is one of international language. It is used in international events accross countries including in Indonesia. In Indonesia English taught in all levels including in University level. State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung have many major in every faculty and in second semester there are English lesson, all of students in second semester like English department students and non-English department students should be take this lesson because it is the obligation. Here, the reseacher was sure that code switching appears in teaching and learning process, especially for non-English department student. For example, when the lecturer wants to make sure whether the students have already understood or not about the explanation related to a certain material, because in Indonesia English is still as the foreign language. This research focus about code switching. The purpose are to know the types of code switching used in teaching and learning English process, and to know the reasons of lecturer using code switching in teaching and learning process. The subject of this research is English lecturer of non-English department students. After that, the research design use qualitative approach and then the design use descriptive method. The researcher use Poplack theory’s to classify the types of code switching Based on the researcher’s analysis, the researcher found that there were three kinds of code switching generally performed by English lecturer in teaching and learning process, they are (1) extra sentential code switching, (2) intra sentential code switching, and (3) inter sentential code switching. It is exactly same type which is recognized on Poplack’s theory. So, this finding can answer the first research problem and strengthen the existed theory. The researcher also found that code switching was used by English lecturer in teaching and learning process depend on the need. Then, the researcher found that why the English lecturer used code switching in teaching and learning process, (1) It is used to build the students understanding.
