Abstract
A test item is a specific question or task that a student is asked to complete. Test items can be objective or subjective. Objective items require students to select the correct response or fill in a word or phrase. Meanwhile, subjective items, or essay items, allow students to organize and present their ideas. Some examples of test items include: Multiple-Choice items and Essay items. The quality of test items can be assessed through the validity and reliability of test items. In this research, the multiple-choice and essay tests were chosen to adapt the audio for the listening activity. The research problem formulation in this study are: (1) Is the multiple-choice test adaptation from the audio in the 'English for Change' handbook valid and reliable?; and (2) Is the essay test adaptation from the audio in the 'English for Change' handbook valid and reliable? The objective of this research is to find out the validity and reliability of the multiple-choice and essay tests adapted from the listening audio of ‘English for Change’ handbook at the 11th-grade students at SMAN 1 Tugu Trenggalek. The method used for this research is a pre-experimental design. The researcher collected data from the adapted multiple-choice and essay test item sheets of audio from the ’English for Change’ handbook. The data collection technique was carried out through documentation techniques. The researcher used a total sample in this study, which included 48 students of 11th graders. The instrument used is a table of item analysis and statistical formulas processed using SPSS 26. The research results show that both of the tests, Multiple-Choice and Essay, were valid. Meanwhile, to determine the internal-consistency reliability of the MCQ, the Cronbach's Alpha test yields a value of 0.750, indicating good reliability, which suggests that each question can be measured accurately. Meanwhile, to test the essay with inter-rater reliability using Cohen's Kappa, which shows a fair agreement between the two raters, is 0.357, meaning that both raters have quite different agreements. The scores of the tests indicate that there is a wide variation in scores between the two raters.
