Keywords: Figurative Language, Secondhand Serenade’s Song Lyrics Figurative language is language that uses words or expression with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation.Figurative language is commonly applied in literary works, such as a song. However, most of people find difficultywhen they are reading or understanding what the composer means in his songs, because what composer conventionally says is not always the same as what he intends to express.With the assumption that figurative language is often used in songs, this research discussed particularly the use of figurative language in Secondhand Serenade’s songs, exactly on the second album “A Twist in My Story”. The statement of the research problems are: 1) What are the kinds of figurativelanguage found in Secondhand Serenade’s song lyrics?2) What are the meanings of figurative language found in Secondhand Serenade’s song lyrics? 3) What are the messages implied in the Secondhand Serenade’s song lyrics by the used of figurative language? . The research design used in this study was descriptive qualitativewith biography approach. The study also belonged to library research.The objects of this studywere Secondhand Serenade’s lyrics of songs.The data of this study were the lyrics of Secondhand Serenade’s song containing figurative language taken from the album entitled A Twist In My Story. The procedures ofcollecting data were: Browsing Secondhand Serenade’s song, Collecting Secondhand Serenade’s song, Reading and understanding the lyric, Identifying all the words, phrase and sentence containing figurative language, and Noting down the data and classifying them.Meanwhile, the data were analyzedthrough thefollowing steps: reading the whole song lyrics while listening to the song,finding the figurative language in song lyrics by identifying the lyric that contained figurative language, classifying kinds of figurative language, interpreting song lyrics to find the meanings of figurative language in the lyrics and their messages, the last step is drawing conclusion based on the analyzed data. In gaining the trustworthiness of the data, the researcher used the theory credibility technique. Finally, in analyzing and interpreting the data, the researcher employedHatch, Reaske, and Keraftheories of figurative language. The result of data analysis showed that there were82 figurative languages and they were categorized into seven kinds of figurative languages, they are: (1) Simile 1, (2) Metaphor 4, (3) Synecdoche 2, (4) Metonymy 3, (5) Personification 15, (6) Hyperbole 47, and (7) Antithesis 10.Meanwhile, related to the meanings, there are various meanings of figurative language used in lyrics of the album of Secondhand Serenade A Twist in My Story. Some examples are “your words felt like a knife” showed the meaning of someone’s words is truly hurtful for the listener heart, “you are an angel”which meantaddressing to someone who truly has a perfect beauty and perfect attitude like an angel, “this break down’s eating me alive” it means that the goodbye is truly hurtful thing in someone life, make someone suffered.Finally related to the messages of the songs containing figurative language, the messages of the songs dealt with the deep feeling of the composer addressed to someone whom he loves.
