The Effectiveness of Using Guided Reading Strategy on Students’ Achievement in Reading Comprehension at MTs Darussalam Kademangan. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr.Sukarsono, M.Pd. Key words: effectiveness, guided reading strategy, reading comprehension Many students felt difficult to master in reading skill because many of them still do not focus during learning process, lack understand on material, lack of vocabulary, passive, bored, sleepy and unmotivated in the class. Besides that, the English teacher only used conventional teaching strategy. The solution to this problem is through by teaching using appropriate strategies. The researcher decided to use Guided Reading strategy to improve their reading comprehension. In Guided Reading strategy, the teacher will be as a facilitator and the model, it is also give opportunity to all of the students to apply the strategies to explore their reading abilities because they get support from the teacher, but it is constantly obtain in independent reading. The formulations of the research problems were: 1) how is the students' achievement in reading comprehension before being taught by using Guided Reading strategy? 2) how is the students' achievement in reading comprehension after being taught by using Guided Reading strategy? 3) is there any significant difference of students' achievement on students’ reading comprehension before and after being taught by using Guided Reading strategy? The purposes of this research were to: 1) to know the students' achievement in reading comprehension before being taught by using Guided Reading strategy. 2) to know the students' achievement in reading comprehension after taught by using Guided Reading strategy. 3) to know the significant differences of students' achievement on students’ reading comprehension before and after being taught by using Guided Reading strategy. The research design of this research was pre-experimental design with quantitative approach. The population of this research was the VII grade students of MTs Darussalam Kademangan. The samples were VII A class consisted of 40 students used purposive sampling. The research instrument was test. The data analysis was using paired sample t-test used SPSS 16.0. The result showed that the students’ mean score in reading comprehension before they are taught by using Guided Reading strategy was 71.68. While the students’ mean score after they are taught by using Guided Reading strategy was 79.28. It was improved from 71.68 to 79.28. The significance value is 0.000 and the significance level is 0.05. It means that the significance value is smaller than significance level (0.000 < 0.05). So it can be conclude that Ha which states that there is a significant influence of using Guided Reading strategy toward students' achievement in reading comprehension at MTs Darussalam Kademangan was accepted. Whereas, Ho which states there is no a significant influence of using Guided Reading strategy toward students' achievement in reading comprehension at MTs Darussalam Kademangan is rejected. In other words, Guided Reading strategy was effective strategy and can be used as an alternative strategy to teach reading to the students at MTs level, especially on the seventh grade of MTs Darussalam Kademangan.
