Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Emmi Naja, M. Pd Keywords: Correlation, Emotional Quotient, Speaking Ability. The Emotional Quotient (EQ) concept argues that IQ is too narrow and there are wider areas of emotional intelligence that enable learners to gain more success in language learning. Speaking is important skills to communicate when learning foreign language, to improve speaking ability, including motivation, attitude or personality types, it seems that one important factor which accounts factor for success in speaking ability is the degree of intelligence that learner possess. Based on the theory said that psychological factors contribute to speaking failure and it is because sense of anxiety when it come to speaking. Therefore, this study attempted to find out the correlation of students’ emotional quotient and students’ English speaking ability. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) Is there any correlation between emotional quotient and speaking ability of the fourth semester students at State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung? The purposes of this study were to: 1) To clarify the correlation between emotional quotient and speaking ability of the fourth semester students in State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung. Research method: This research used correlative quantitative research. It is attempted to find out the relation of emotional quotient and speaking ability students’. The population of this study was students 4th semester in State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung. While the sample was 4B class that consist 39 who follow the test. The data were obtained EQ questionnaire and students’ English speaking test. The questionnaire use in this study was BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory to assess emotional intelligence of students’. The result found that there is no relationship between emotional intelligence and English speaking ability. This research also shows that EQ is not a potential predictor for speaking ability. So, the emotional intelligence hasn’t any role on students’ speaking ability. It is also strongly recommended for further study to continue studying the relationship of EQ on various aspects of language skills by using a number of different EQ instruments.
