Abstract
ABSTRACT Haslinda. Register Student. 1723143068. The Effectiveness Of Pairs Check Strategy (PCS) Toward Students’ Reading Comprehension Ability At The Seventh Grade Of Mts Aswaja Tunggangri In Academic Year 2017/2018. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M. Pd Keywords: Effectiveness, Pairs Check Strategy (PCS), Reading Comprehension. Reading is one of language skills which is very important to be learnt by students. Through this activity, students can improve their own language and experience. Reading comprehension ability became very important, but in act many students are having difficulty in comprehending. This is a condition where the importance of reading strategies comes in so as to facilitate the reading process and give students a clear sense of what they are reading. Based on explanation above, the writer has the motivation to conduct the research, entitled The Effectiveness of Pairs Check Strategy (PCS) Toward Students’ Reading Comprehension Ability at The Seventh Grade of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri in Academic Year 2017/2018. The formulations of the research problem in this study are: (1) How is the students’ reading comprehension ability before they are taught by using pairs check strategy? (2) How is the students’ reading comprehension ability after they are taught by using pairs check strategy? (3) Is there any significant difference scores in reading of the students before and after taught Pairs Check Strategy at the seventh grade of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri in the academic year 2017/2018? The objectives of this research are: (1) To know the students’ reading comprehension ability before they are taught by using pairs check strategy (2) To know the students’ reading comprehension ability after they are taught by using pairs check strategy (3) To know the significant differences scores in reading of the students before and after taught using pairs check strategy at the seventh grade students of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri in the academic year 2017/2018 Method of this research: This research uses pre-Experimental Design using quantitative approach with one group pre-test and post-test design. It is intended to find out any significant differences scores of the students before and after taught using pairs check strategy at the seventh grade students of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri in the academic year 2017/2018. The population of this study was all the 7th grade students at MTs Aswaja Tunggangri. While, the sample was VII A class that consists of 20 students. The research instrument that was used is test. Test is administered toward one group of students that is class 7A. Test administered before conducting treatment that is called pre test and also administered after conducting treatment that is called post-test. Treatment that is used is by pairs check strategy (PCS). The data of this research is students score in pre-test and post-test, and to analysis that data the writer used SPSS 18 for windows. The result of this study showed that the mean of students’ score of pretest before they are taught being using pairs check strategy (PCS) toward students’ reading comprehension was (62, 75). While the mean of students’ score after they are taught being using pairs check strategy (PCS) was (73, 50). The Sig. (2-tailed) or the p value (two-tailed) is 0.007. Given that the present test is one-tailed test, so the Sig. (2-tailed) or the p value (0.007) is divided by two: 0.007/ 2 = 0.0035, and the significance level (α) is 0.05. Since 0.0035 is smaller than significance level (α) 5%. The null hypothesis is rejected. In other word, the hypothesis saying that the mean after the treatment is smaller than or equal to the one before the treatment is rejected. It automatically accepts the alternative hypothesis saying that the mean after the treatment is bigger than the one before the treatment. The conclusion is that Pairs Check Strategy (PCS) is effective toward student’s reading comprehension ability.
