Abstract

Reading is one of the most important skills that should be mastered by students. Through reading, students get many information and knowledge. In reading skill, comprehension is the main goal and questioning is a key to learning. According to the expert, one way to approach questions is to study Question Answer Relationship (QAR) Strategy. In this strategy, the question has a relationship with its answer which is every answer of each question can be found by identifying the questions type. The expert stated that by using this strategy, the students are able to determine where to find the information needed to answer a question. Therefore, the researcher wants to conduct a study about the effectiveness of using Question Answer Relationship (QAR) Strategy toward students’ ability in reading comprehension. The problem in this study is: Is there any significant difference of students’ ability in reading comprehension for eleventh graders of SMA Al-Azhaar between students who are taught by using Question Answer Relationship (QAR) Strategy and students who are not taught by using Question Answer Relationship (QAR) Strategy? The aim, therefore, is to figure out whether there is any significant difference of students’ ability in reading comprehension for eleventh graders of SMA Al-Azhaar between students who are taught by using Question Answer Relationship (QAR) Strategy and students who are not taught by using Question Answer Relationship (QAR) Strategy. Research method used in this study was quantitative method. This study used quasi-experimental research design with nonrandomized control group, pretest-posttest design because because the researcher could not randomly put the subject. The sample of this study is all the population of eleventh grade at SMA Al-Azhaar that consist of 25 students of experimental class and 27 students of control class. The sample was choosen by the English teacher due to the equal ability in English. The research instrument of this study is a test. The researcher computed independent sample test to analyse the data by using SPSS 16.0 version. The result found out that the mean of experiment class after being taught by Question Answer Relationship (QAR) Strategy is 72.8 while the mean of control class after being taught without any strategy is 59.6. It showed that the mean of students’ score in experimental class is higher than the mean of students’ score in control class. It indicates that Question Answer Relationship Strategy (QAR) is effective to use in teaching reading comprehension rather than teaching students without any strategy. Keywords: effectiveness, question answer relationship, reading comprehension
