Abstract
ABSTRACT Ekasari, Ela Diana. Students Registered Number. 1723143192. 2018. The Effectiveness of Using Think Aloud Strategy Towards Students Reading Comprehension Of The First Grade Students At Sman 01 Campurdarat. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd. Keywords: effectiveness, Think Aloud, reading comprehension Reading is an active process that depends on both an author’s ability to convey meaning using words and our ability to create meaning from them. To read successfuly, the reader need to constantly connect what the reader already know about the information to the words of the author has written. The use of Think Aloud could create the condition to help students connect with the information that the author has written. Think Aloud is one of cooperative learning methods. In Think Aloud strategy, students learn to understand reading passage in a group. In this strategy, the students are divided into some groups. Students in a group they will discuss each other by giving their own opinion to their partner. After that they will share their thought about the reading passage to other group which speak loudly. After that, if there is the different thought they will discuss it with other group and also the teacher to make it clear. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) How is the students’ reading comprehension before they are taught by using Think Aloud strategy? 2) How is the students’ reading comprehension after they are taught by using Think Aloud strategy? 3) Is there any significant difference on the students’ reading achievement before and after being taught using Think Aloud strategy? The purpose of this study were to: 1) To know the students’ reading comprehension before they are taught by using Think Aloud reading strategy, 2) To know the students’ reading comprehension after they are taught by using Think Aloud reading strategy, 3) To identify if there is significant difference on the students’ reading achievement before and after being taught using Think Aloud strategy. Research Method: 1) the researcher design in this study was experimental design with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this study was all students of the first grade students at SMAN 01 Campurdarat Tulungagung, 3) the sample was X IPA 5 consisting of 30 students, 4) the research instrument was test, 5) the data analysis was using T test. The result showed that the students’ score in reading comprehension before they are taught by using Think Aloud strategy was 59.33. While the students’ score after being taught by using Think Aloud strategy was 76.80. The p-value (Sig 2-Tailed) was 0.000, and it was less than significance level 95% (α=0.05). It showed that 0.000 < 0.05 or 0.000 was less than 0.05. Whereas, Ho which states that there is no significant difference of using Think Aloud strategy to teach reading text to X IPA 5 graders at SMAN 01 Campurdarat Tulungagung is rejected. In other words, think aloud strategy can be used as an alternative strategy to teach in reading comprehension to the students at SMA level.
