Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah M.Pd. Keywords: improving, the students’ motivation in speaking, Problem Sticks. The present research was categorized into Classroom Action Research (CAR) applying Problem Sticks. It was applied to solve the students’ motivation problem in learning especially in speaking class. This research was intended to answer the single question “How can “Problem Sticks” technique improve students’ motivation in speaking ability at seventh grade of SMPN 1 Sumbergempol Tulungagung?” The subject of the study was the VIII G students of SMPN 1 Sumbergempol Tulungagung in the period 2017/2018, which involves 32 students. This study applied collaborative classroom action research between the researcher and English teacher. In this study, the researcher conducted two cycles that covered planning, implementation, observation and reflection. Each cycles of this study consisted of three meetings. The instruments of this research were interview guide and observation sheet. The data were taken from the result of interview with the English teacher and observation during the process of teaching and learning process through the observation sheet in each cycle, which were analyzed descriptively. The criteria of success in this research students enthusiastic to participate the teaching and learning process. The students are enthusiastic and approximately 75 percent of them participate during the teaching learning by attending in the class and raising their hand, and the students’ participant and activeness in speaking activity and group working. Based on the observation sheet from the analysis of the teaching and learning process in speaking by using problem stick in cycle 1, it was found that most of the students still have low in motivation to speak. Although some of them could get improvement in their motivation, but the criteria of success have not achieved yet. In conclusion, the implementation of the strategy in cycle 1 is still needed to be revised. Based on the observation sheet from the analysis of the teaching and learning process in speaking by using problem sticks as media in cycle 2, it was found that most of the students got improvement motivation in speaking. The students were more active and enthusiastic during teaching and learning process. There were 4 students who could not achieve the criteria of success and 28 of the students were successfull and the criteria of success could be achieved. The innovation of teaching that produced from this research, the teacher could used problem stick as media in speaking class. The teacher divided the students into some groups and asked each groups to make a text description in the form dialogue. After the implementation of problem sticks, the students’ motivation could be improved. They enjoyed during teaching and learning processed. The researcher expected the English teacher to use Problem Stick as one of many alternatives media in teaching speaking and the future researcher were expected to be able to conduct the similar research related with problem sticks as an alternative media in improving students’ motivation for teaching speaking in another setting involving under respondents or the experimental research as a comparison with the present study.
