Keywords: Effectiveness, Collaborative Strategic Reading, Reading Comprehension Reading is becoming an important need for students to get knowledge from global information which is mostly written in English. Thus, to get many information do not just read the text but they have to comprehend the text. Sometimes to read the text the students to find out some difficulties, like they lack of vocabulary. To motivate students interested in reading, the researcher used on form of cooperative learning strategy for teaching reading comprehension that is Collaborative Strategic Reading. This strategy helps students became more active and understanding the meaning of the text easily because it can increase the vocabulary of students. The formulation of the research problem was: Is there any significant difference before and after being taught by using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) in SMPN 1 Ngantru Tulungagung? The purposes of this research was to analyze whether there is any significant difference on the students’ reading comprehension before and after being taught by using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) strategy of the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Ngantru Tulungagung. The research method of this research used quantitative approach with preexperimental design. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Ngantru Tulungagung consisting of 1 classes. The sample is C class of the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Ngantru Tulungagung. This class consists of 31 students. The research instrument was test (pre test and post test). The technique of data analysis used Paired Sample Test which was used to find out the difference of students’ mean score in reading comprehension between pre-test and post-test by using SPSS v.16 for windows. The result showed that the students’ mean score in reading comprehension before they are taught by using CSR strategy (pre-test) was 68.71. While the students’ score in reading comprehension after they are taught by using CSR strategy (post-test) was 87.74. The significant value was 0.000, whereas with significant level was 0.05. It means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which state that there is significant different score of the students reading comprehension before and after being taught by using CSR startegy of the seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Ngantru Tulungagung was accepted. The null hypothesis (Ho) which state that there is no significant different score of the students reading comprehension before and after being taught by using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) strategy of the seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Ngantru Tulungagung was rejected. It could be conclude that using Collaborative Strategic viii Reading (CSR) strategy was effective used in teaching reading comprehension on descriptive text.
