The Effectiveness Using Talking Stick Towards Students Vocabulary Mastery As Fifth Grade At MI Abun Naja Wonodadi in Academic Year 2016/2017. Thesis.English Education Department.Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: MuhBasuni, M.Pd. Keyword : effectiveness, talking stick, vocabulary Vocabulary is basic to communication. The people use word to express themselves and communicate with other people. One technique in mastering vocabulary is talking stick. It is one of method to teaching vocabulary in many forms. In this study, the technique was modified appropriately with the characteristics of young learner that is the fifth grade students of elementary school. The student who gets the stick must memorise the vocabularies that wrote in the paperbefore. They should mention the word in the stick appropriate with the word which is mentioned by the teacher. When the students can remember all the word, they can continuing to give the stick to the other friend randomly. It makes the students memorize the new word easily and know how to pronounce the word. The formulation of the research problems are (1) How is the students’ score in vocabulary before they are taught using talking stick? (2) how is the students score in vocabulary after they are taught using talking stick? (3) is there any significant different scores of students in vocabulary before and after they are taught using talking stick? The purpose of this research are to: (1) find out the students’ score in vocabulary before they are taught using talking stick, (2) find out the students’ score in vocabulary after they are taught using talking stick,(3) find out significant different scores of students in vocabulary before and after they are taught using talking stick. The research design was pre-experimental research design by using one group pre-test post- test with quantitative approach. The population of this research was all students of fifth grade at Abun Naja Wonodadi. The sample was students of fifth grade students consisting 10 students through purposive sampling. The research instrument were test that are pre-test and post-test. The data analysis was using T-test. The result of this study showed that the mean of total scores of students’ vocabulary mastery before being taught using talking stick was( 72)while the mean of total scores of students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught using talking stick was (89,5). statistical calculation using T-test showed the result of t-count was (4.134) and the result of t-table for standard significant 5% was 2.262. it is known that t-count is higher than t-table (4.134 > 2.262). this means that alternative hypothesis (H_a) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H_O)was rejected. In conclusion, there is significant difference in the vocabulary score of the students before they are taught using talking stick and after they are taught using talking stick. It can be concluded that talking stick is effective in teaching vocabulary to elementary school, especially for fifth grade students of MI Abun Naja Wonodadi.
