Abstract
Keyword: Error analysis, Mechanics of Writing. Writing is one of important parts in studying English, because studying writing can increase the student’s skill in manipulating their sentence construction. The writing skill uses written form of language, which there are several rules that build to create a good writing such as organizing, vocabulary, grammar structure, and mechanics of writing. The mechanics of writing is used to make the sentence clearly to be understood; so that there is no ambiguous in sentence, which decreases the clarity meaning. However, the students often ignore it. In addition, the error cannot be avoided. As that reason, the error needs to be analyzed by the teacher. Furthermore, by analyzing the errors made by students, the teacher can check if the teaching and learning process has run well or not. The formulation of the research: 1) what is the type of an error on mechanics of writing made by the students of fourth semester of IAIN Tulungagung? 2) what is the type of an error on mechanics of writing frequently made by the students of fourth semester of IAIN Tulungagung? The purpose of this study were: 1) to analyze the type of error on mechanics of writing made by the students, 2) to know the dominant error on mechanics of writing made by the students Research method: 1) the research design in this study was descriptive design with quantitative approach, 2) the population in this study was the students who study English in fourth semester of IAIN Tulungagung, 3) the sample was in 4C class that consist of 27 students, 4) the instrument that was used to collect the data was writing test document, 5) the data analysis was using identifying and classifying the mechanics of writing errors. The result showed that there were four aspects of mechanics of writing error which consist of omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. There were 259 times of omission, 467 times of addition, 121 times of misformation, and 6 times of misordering. Based on the result of analysis, the most frequent mechanics of writing errors made by the students of fourth semester of IAIN Tulungagung academic year of 2013-2014 was error of addition.
