English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisor : Muh. Basuni, M.pd Key Word : code switching, English teacher Code switching is the switch the code between one language to another language. The teacher switched the language from English to Indonesia. The English teacher switched the language because many students cannot understand the uttarances in English. The teacher have many reasons in using code switching. Teacher needs strategy to make students interesting about English in teaching – learning process. Code switching was the way to explain the English lesson maximally. The formulation of the research problems were : (1) What are the types of code switching that used by the English teacher in second grade of Mtsn 3 Tulungagung? (2) why does the English teacher in second grade of Mtsn 3 Tulungagung use code switching in Teaching – Learning English? The aims of the study were : (1) to find out what the types of code switching that used by the English teacher in second grade of Mtsn 3 Tulungagung and (2) to describe what reason of the English teacher in using code switching for teaching – learning English in second grade of Mtsn 3 Tulungagung. The research method of this study : (1) the research design of this study was descriptive research with qualitative approach (2) data sources of the research was the English teacher in second grade of Mtsn 3 Tulungagung. (3) the method of collecting data was observation and interview (4) technique of verification datawas triangulation methodologically (5) technique of of data analysis was data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result showed that the researcher found four types of code switching, those were (1) Intra – sentential switches (2) Inter – sentential switches (3) Emblematic switches (4) Establishing continuity. The researcher found nine reason in using code switching, those were : (1) Talking about particular (2) Quoting somebody else (3) Being Emphatic about something (4) Interjection (5) Repetition used for clarification (6) Intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutors (7) Expressing group identity (8) To soften and stregthen request or command (9) the need real lexical. Additional reason also gotten that the English teacher use code code switching (1) to make the students understand the material deeply (2) to help the students to master English (3) Spontaneity (4) To make the students familiar with uttarances in English (5) to make the students can differenciate the kind of sentences.
