ABSTRACT Dianitasari, Fitri. NIM. 1723143057. 2019. The Effectiveness of Using Mnemonic Keyword Method on Students’ Vocabulary Mastery of the Eighth Grader of Mts Al Ma’arif Tulungagung. Advisor: Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd Keywords: Vocabulary Mastery, Mnemonic Keyword Method Vocabulary is an important aspect in language learning. To understand a language, students be able to master the vocabulary. Without having enough vocabulary, the students will get some difficulties in developing the four language skills. Related studying vocabulary, the students of eight grade at MTs Al Ma’arif have difficulties to memorize the meaning of the words and remembering new vocabulary. In this case, mnemonic keyword method can be used to help students easier to memorize the strange words and also can strengthen students vocabulary mastery. The formulation of the research problem in this study is: is there any significant different score of the students vocabulary mastery taught with and without using mnemonic keyword method of the eighth grader of MTs Al Ma’arif Tulungagung? The objective of the research is: to find out whether there is any significant different score of the students vocabulary mastery taught with and without using mnemonic keyword method of the eighth grader of MTs Al Ma’arif Tulungagung. This research used Quasi-Experimental Research by using Nonrandomized Control Group, Pretest-Posttest design. The population was all students of eigth graders of MTs Al Ma’arif Tulungagung. The sample of the study was two groups of 75 students of VIII A as experimental group and VIII B as control group that chosen by purposive sampling technique. The research instrument used is test. The researcher analyzed the data by using Independent Sample T-test with SPSS Statistics 16.0. The result of this study showed that there is any significant different score of the students vocabulary mastery taught with and without using mnemonic keyword method. It can be seen from the mean of students’ gained score in experimental group was 14.03 while the mean of students’ gained score in control group was 5.38. The mean of posttest in experimental group was 76.53 and the mean of posttest in control group was 65.38. Then, the significant p-value is smaller than the significant level (0.000 < 0.05). In other words, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means that mnemonic keyword method was effective in vocabulary mastery at the eigth grade of MTs Al Ma’arif Tulungagung.
