Keywords: Characterization, young adolescent learner, main characters, novel, literature In order bringing the character engaging, author has strategies in projecting character to be more realistic for the readers. The way of authors in presenting or depicting the development of images, the minds or how the character live in the story they wrote is called characterization. For the readers understanding characterization may influence the way they see a character’s disposition, which is as complex as human beings’ that cannot be judged from only one aspects. The formulation of problems in this study were: 1) What method of characterization used by the writer of Fish in a Tree for the main characters? 2) What are techniques of characterization used by the writer of Fish in a Tree for the main characters? 3)What are special traits owned by the main characters in Fish in A Tree that help them cope with problems as young adolescent learner? Based on the formulation of research problems, the purposes of this study were: 1) To know method of characterization used by the writer of Fish in a Tree for the main characters. 2) To know technique of characterization used by the writer of Fish in a Tree for the main characters. 3) To know special traits owned by the main characters in Fish in A Tree that help them cope with problems as young adolescent learner. In this study the researcher used descriptive qualitative approach in which the data in the form of written or oral words of people and behavior which can be observed. The main source of the data in this study is a novel entitled "Fish in A Tree" by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. In this study, the credibility of the data was achieved by doing two essential things; which are reading the novel "Fish in A Tree" thoroughly more than two times and also noting every description and dialogue that explain the characterization of main characters. The researcher used the method of characterization from Kenney and Lajos’ three dimensions of character as a fundamental basis of theory. In analyzing the data of this study, the researcher used procedures from Miles and Huberman (2014:12) theory of qualitative data analysis, which are data condensation (formerly known as data reduction), data display and conclusion drawing or verification. The result of this study showed that the author of Fish in a Tree used four among five methods of characterization, which are dramatic method, character on other character method, contextual method and mixed method with the exception of discursive method. The writer also used technique in presenting the complexity of character disposition by considering three dimension of characters, which are Physiological, Sociological and Psychological. On the base of characterization, the researcher found special traits owned by the main characters that help them cope with their problems as young adolescent learners. Those traits that make x them unique than other characters in the story are creativity, curiosity, love of learning, bravery, perseverance, and honesty
