English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah M.Pd. This study is conducted to improve the students’ reading comprehension in hortatory exposition text by using Annotating Text Strategy. This research is intended to answer the single question “How can Annotating Text Strategy improve the student’s reading comprehension of hortatory exposition text in eleventh grade of MAN 3 Tulungagung?” This research is a classroom action research (CAR) that adapted from Kemmis and Mc Taggart Model. It is applied to solve the problems of the students in reading class. This study is carried out in two cycles which each cycle consisted of three meetings namely, planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. This research is conducted in class of IIS-2 that consisted of 33 students in the academic year of 2018/2019. The instrument of this research is interview guide and observation sheet. The data are taken from the result of interview with the English teacher and observation sheet that analyzed during the process of teaching and learning in the class. The criteria of success in this research are: students are active and motivated during teaching and learning process and 70% of the students score in reading test at least 75. The result is showed that the use of Annotating Text Strategy can improve the students' reading comprehension and can achieve of the criteria of success. Based on the observation sheet from the analysis of the teaching and learning process using Annotating Text Strategy, the increasing of student enthusiasm to participate in the teaching and learning process is seen from the first meeting in cycle 1 which is only 54% and experienced an increase in the last meeting in cycle 2 which is 90%. It is also support by the achievement from the percentage of student scores. In preliminary test, there are only 4 students or 12.1% who achieve the criteria of success. While in the cycle 2, there are 4 students who do not achieve the criteria of success and 29 students or 87.8% who achieve the criteria of success. The researcher expected to the English teacher to consider about using Annotating Text Strategy for new reference as an effective alternative strategy to trigger the students’ comprehension of the text especially English text and the future researcher expect to be used as comparison reference to conduct other research dealing with the methodology in language teaching.
