Abstract

Key Word : Deixis, Readers’ forum of Jakarta Post Every utterance is made in a particular place, at particular time and it occurs in a certain situation. It is made by a particular person (the speaker) and it is usually addressed in some other persons (the listener). The speaker and the listener are subject and object as a crucial centre because both of them have multiple roles in utterance. Deixis is a part of discourse analysis which is concerning to the context of utterance referring to who is speaking, the time or place of speaking, the gestures of the speaker or the current location of the discourse. (Levinson: 1983). The readers’ forum is one of column which contains some opinions and comment and it covers many issues that are up to date. It also contains some opinion and comment with its various forms of someone’s opinion from every perspective side live such as education perspective. This study is aimed at finding out what deixis expressions are used in the readers’ forum of the Jakarta Post Newspaper. This research was conducted by using quantitative descriptive method, it is because the data are the form of number and words such as description of deixis used in readers’ forum and also because of the writer choosed the print media (Jakarta Post Newspaper) as object of the research. And the analyzed data were in the forms of words or utterance in the readers’ forum of Jakarta Post which publish from January to Mei 2011 in certain topic, it is education. The research findings show that there are five kinds deixis, namely person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, social deixis, discourse deixis. Time deixis is appeared to point the certain period of time when the utterance is produced the speaker and even occurs. Place deixis is realized to describe a location relative to location of participant in speech event, as well as have been shown in the context, likewise, the person deixis is used when the speaker shown the inspirations to the addressee. Moreover, there is social deixis which is shown to indicate the social absolute relation. Most of the writers in the readers’ forum used the relational social deixis because they assume that we have the same social status. While the last term, it is discourse deixis which is used for the purpose of referring not to the sentence which is spoken but the purpose behind of the statement made by speaker. The percentage of deixis usage in readers’ forum of Jakarta post are: Person deixis is the one which reached great level than another, it means was used by 23 times or 40%. The next is time deixis usage which was in the second level. And discourse deixis was also being in the same level with time deixis. Both were used 13 times or 22%. While place deixis was used by 7 times or 12% from the whole. And the most rarely used deixis is social deixis type, it was just used by twice or 4%. It is recommended to the next research who are interested in deixis to analyze the relation between grammatical cases and deixis. For the readers, they are suggested to understand every aspect which is used to understand deixis and make more complete analyses on the same field to avoid the misconstruction especially in comments.
