Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. Keywords: taboo words, types, functions, Straight outta Compton Movie. Taboo words can be defined as forbidden terms to utter since they may hurt others. They exist in most of language including English. They are used in daily life to express people feelings and emotions. The use of taboo words can cause discomfort and different response from the listeners. The conversation would go smoothly when the listeners feel fine, but instead it would be mess if they feel hurt. Therefore, by understanding the feature of taboo words, people are expected to be able to use English wisely in daily communication. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) What types of taboo words are used in Straight outta Compton movie? 2) What are the functions of taboo words used in Straight outta Compton movie? The purposes of this study were to: 1) Know the types of taboo words used in Straight outta Compton movie, 2) Know the functions of taboo words used in Straight outta Compton movie. Research Method: 1) This research was conducted in a descriptive qualitative method, 2) The sources of the data in this research were Straight outta Compton movie and transcript of the dialogues, 3) This research used document analysis to collect data since the data are gotten from the transcript of the dialogues in the movie, 4) The major instrument in this research was the researcher and the secondary instrument was data sheet, 5) Data analysis used in this research were data reduction, data display, and verification. The research findings: 1) All types of taboo words according to Battistella (2005) exist in the movie, they are epithet, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity. Epithet becomes the most type used in the movie because it is considered as the best taboo words to draw listeners’ attention with slurs connected to gender, ethnic, one’s appearance, and disabilities. Besides, obscenity becomes the least type of taboo words used in the movie. It can be noticed that obscenity is not effective enough to draw listeners’ attention. 2) All functions of taboo words according to Wardhaugh (2006) exist in the movie, they are to draw attention, to show contempt, to be provocative, and to mock authority. To draw attention becomes the most function of taboo words used in the movie because the characters utter taboo words to their friends or people who have a close relationship with them. It can be the most effective function to show what they want such as asking their friends to do something and asking their friends to believe what they say. Meanwhile, taboo words used to mock authority appears as the least function because the movie most talking about friends’ struggle as a group in their career against the realities of life in America.
