Advisor: Muhamad Basuni, M.Pd Keywords: Effectiveness, speaking, teaching speaking, talking chips technique Speaking is one of language skill that has to be mastered by students besides listening, reading, and writing. It is the macro-skills of language that concerns on the abilities to carry out spoken communication, such as conversation, dialogue, monologue, and news casting. It is one skill that have to be mastered by students in order to achieve learning objective which appropriate with standard comptence and basic competence in school based curriculum. Therefore, there is activity which can be used in teaching speaking that is Talking Chips Technique. Talking Chips is a technique which encourages equal participations. In this technique the students do speaking activities cooperatively. Talking chips technique can ensure all students in a group share their ideas. In this technique the students are given plastic chips each and instruct them to place one chip in the center of the table each time they talk, once their chips are gone, students must remain silent until the other people around the table have contributed their ideas and uses their chips. The formulation of the research problem were How is the effectiveness of using Talking chips technique in teaching speaking of second grade students at MTs N TunggangriKalidawir? The purpose of this research were to find out whether or not the use of talking chips technique is effective in teaching speaking of second grade students at MTs N TunggangriKalidawir Research method: 1) the research design in this research was experimental design with quantitative approach, 2)the population of this research was all students of second grade students at MTs N TunggangriKalidawirTulungagaung, 3) the sample was VIII B class consisting of 42 students, 4) the research instrument was speaking test. 5) the data analysis was using Paired sample T test SPSS 6.0 The result showed that the Sig. (2-tailed) is 0,000. If Sig. (2-tailed) > 0,05, Null hypothesis (H0) is accepted. Then if Sig. (2-tailed) < 0,05 Alternative hypothesis (Ha ) is accepted. Based on the result of paired sample test, the Sig. (2-tailed) is 0,000. It means the probability is less than 0,05 (0,000 < 0,05). Based on the result, alternative hypothesis (Ha) that states there is significant difference of students’ speaking ability by using talking chips technique is accepted, while null hypothesis (Ho) that states there is no significant difference of students’ speaking ability by using talking chips technique is rejected. Therefore, talking chips technique can be used as alternative technique to teach speaking to the students at MTs Level
