Abstract
The Analysis of Writing Anxiety among EFL in Islamic Vocational High School 1 Durenan. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Ida Isnawati, M.Pd. Keywords: writing anxiety, EFL learner. Writing is one of the skills that need to be mastered, especially in pouring ideas into desired sentences. However, writing activities can be disrupted because of a problem, namely writing anxiety. The majority of Indonesian students’ study English, but do not use it in everyday language. This gives a lot of problems for them when writing in English. This problem arises because of their anxiety when they will pour their ideas into English. This study aims to analyze what the factors that caused anxiety in students when doing English writing. This study also purposes to identify what the students’ types of anxiety. In addition, this research purposes to figure out the suitable strategies to overcome the students’ writing anxiety. Sources of data from this study were three students who had the highest anxiety among other students from tenth grade class from accounting department at SMK Islam 1 Durenan. The instruments of this research are interview guides and field notes from the students' observations when doing a free writing test for 10 minutes. Data analysis for this research used the theory of Miles and Huberman theory (1994:10). According to the data analysis, the researcher concluded that there are several factors that influence students so that writing anxiety arises, including fear of negative evaluation and fear of test, time pressure, low of self-confident, lack of writing technique, language difficulties, lack of topical knowledge, lack of writing practice, pressure for perfect work, and high frequency of assignment. Researchers have also concluded that there are two types of anxiety experienced by students, namely cognitive anxiety and somatic anxiety. In addition, the researcher also concluded that there are several strategies that can be done to overcome anxiety while writing, including trying to stay focus and calm, discussing their problem with peer students, taking breaks, making some pauses during the writing process, and enriching topical knowledge.
