Keywords: Language function, Character, Main character, Movie. One of the most crucial aspects of human life is language. People can fulfil their urge to survive by receiving and sending language. Language is mostly spoken, but it may also be written. Humans can communicate and share whatever they desire by using language. This study looks at the function of language and how the main character used language functions in “Raya and The Last Dragon movie” movie using Janet Holmes’s theory to conduct research, consists of: expressive, directive, referential, metalinguistic, poetic, and phatic functions. The researcher chose “Raya and The Last Dragon” movie as the data source to be researched because the researcher believes that movie is one of many ways to make teaching and learning more enjoyable and this movie has many practical lessons that are important for the learning process. This study employs a qualitative approach and descriptive method. The data for this study is the script in the form of speech produced by the main character that contains any types of language functions. Data collection was carried out by these steps: (i) watching and understanding the film, (ii) downloading and matching the script with the movie, (iii) identifying the main character's utterances that containing language functions, (iv) describing contextual meaning of the utterance. The result of this study shows that the six types of language functions occur, they are: 6 expressive, 7 directive, 5 referential, 8 metalinguistic, 2 poetic, 4 phatic. Also grammatical realization, in expressive function found 4 declarative and 2 exclamatory grammatical structures. Second, in directive function found 2 declarative, an interrogative, and 4 imperative grammatical structures. Third, in referential function found an interrogative, and 4 declarative grammatical structures. Fourth, in metalinguistic function found 8 interrogative grammatical structures. Fifth, in poetic function found 2 declarative grammatical structures. Last, in phatic function found a declarative, an interrogative, and 2 exclamatory grammatical structures.
