English Education Department.Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd Keywords: Teacher Strategies, Teaching speaking, self-confidence. Speaking has an important role in our lives. By having good speaking skills and feeling confident, the students will be able to communicate with each other and develop their ability to be wise speakers both in class and in daily life. There are many ways to help the students overcome their difficulties in speaking English. Teachers’ methods and techniques also mean making students pay attention to understand the speaking materials. But the teacher should select the strategy that is appropriate for the student's needs and material. The teaching strategy greatly affects the students’ understanding of the process of learning and making students improve their speaking skills. Therefore, it encourages researchers to conduct research on teachers' strategies in teaching speaking English at MA. Darul Lughah Wal Karomah. Because the students in this school have good results in speaking English. The general problem of this research is, "What kinds of English teacher's strategy in teaching speaking and how is the teacher’s strategy to encourage students' self-confidence to speak English at MA. Darul Lughah Wal Karomah?" The objectives of this study are to describe the teacher's strategy in teaching speaking and how the teacher’s strategy to encourages student’ self-confidence in speaking English at MA. Darul Lughah and Karomah. This study used qualitative research and the design was descriptive design. The data source of this research was an English teacher of MA. Darul Lughah Wal Karomah. The data of this study are obtained through in-depth interviews and documents. Then, use the interactive analysis method of Miles and Huberman to analyze the data, including data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. In order to check the credibility of the data, the researcher used data sources and methodological triangulation in this study. The result of this study is that the researchers found that there are some strategies for teaching speaking in MA. Darul Lughah Wal Karomah, teachers use drilling strategy, discussion, recording transcripts, story-telling, and games. The five strategies that teachers used were successful in improving students’ speaking abilities. It was proven from the results of the interviews with the teachers. In the process of teaching speaking, teachers often face several problems that make students not confident when speaking in English. They lack motivation and fear making mistakes. So, there are some solutions found by the teacher to solve the problem faced in order to encourage students’ confidence in speaking. The strategies were using motivation strategies, giving practice speaking by using role-play and giving feedback.
