Abstract
ABSTRACT Askab, Iqbal Muhammad. Student Registered Number. 12203183239. 2022. Learners’ Strategy In Reading English Comprehension. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty Of Tarbiyah And Teacher Training. State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. Keywords: Learners’, Strategy, Reading English, Comprehension. Reading is one of the four skills that must be mastered in Learning English as a second/foreign language. The main target in reading is the learner's reading comprehension competence to understand the content as used in written material. Without comprehension, the reading activity is only reading and follows the text from left to right without any understanding and as a result, words on the page have no meaning. Thus, the learner needs a reading strategy, especially in reading comprehension. This study aims to find out what are the learning strategies used by learners in their reading English comprehension activities. This study also aims to find out whether the strategies applied by learners affect their reading English comprehension. This study used qualitative research with a descriptive design. This research conducted at the state Islamic university sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The source of data from this study is three students of the English education department in semesters 8 & 6 who had a fairly good comprehension score at the time when they were still in semester 4 in the English comprehension reading course. The instruments of this study are in-depth semi-structured interviews and documents in the form of their score in the Reading English comprehension course. for data analysis techniques using Miles and Huberman's theory (1992: 23). Based on the analysis, researchers found that learners tended to use only 2 strategies and several sub strategies in their activity of reading comprehension. These strategies include metacognitive learning strategies, in this strategy, there are sub-strategies including planning, monitoring, & evaluating. learners are often good at applying some of these strategies in their reading activities. These students are also skilled and good at using cognitive strategies in solving problems that they face during the learning process. The researcher concluded that the strategies learners used had a good effect on achievement and improving their quality of themselves. this is inseparable from the motivational factor and the sense of their interest which is deeper in reading so that it affects and has a good effect on the application of each strategy that they use.
