Thesis Sarjana. English Education Program. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Hj. Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd. Keyword: Monopoly Board Game, Teaching Speaking Learning English is important for human life, not only about knowledge but also in several aspects such as in the field of social, culture, economy, business, technology, etc. Moreover, the assumption about people who good in English will gain a higher identity or prestige. Among the English skills, speaking is one skill that should be mastered by the students. Unfortunately, there are some problems in speaking that faced by the students although English has been taught since kinder garden until university level, such as the students’ believe that English is difficult, confuse and loss their idea to say, fell shy or got anxiety, and English is considered to be learned to pass the examination only. In additional, it can be caused the traditional teaching also. So, teacher should find appropriate solution, such as using media to attract students’ interest in learning speaking. One of media that can be used is monopoly board game. The English tutor of Al Kamal Islamic Boarding School Blitar used this monopoly board game to teach speaking class. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) How does the teacher teach speaking using monopoly board game in the first grade of junior high school students at Al Kamal Islamic Boarding School Blitar? 2) How were the students’ respond toward the use of monopoly board game as media for teaching speaking in the first grade of junior high school students at Al Kamal Islamic Boarding School Blitar? The research objectives were: 1) To know how the teacher teach speaking using monopoly board game in the first grade of junior high school students at Al Kamal Islamic Boarding School Blitar. 2) To know how the student’s respond toward the use of monopoly board game as media for teaching speaking in the first grade of junior high school students at Al Kamal Islamic Boarding School Blitar. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The subject were an English tutor and students in the first grade of junior high school students. For data collecting method, the researcher used observation, interview, and documentation. The data analysis used were data condensation, data analysis, and conclusion. The result showed that the use of monopoly board game applied in group that consist of 5 students and the material that taught was descriptive text. Then the students give some positive responses, such as they were happy, enthusiastic in learning process, and they can understand the material well. In addition, the use of monopoly affects their achievement in speaking.
