Improving the Students’ Ability in Reading Narrative Text by Using Five W’s Stars Diagram at SMPN 1 Sumbergempol in the Academic Year 2015/2016. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Keywords: Five Stars Diagram, Improve, Reading, Narrative text Reading is an activity to understand a text. There are many advantages of reading, such as it can add our vocabulary and we can get new knowledge. The researcher took eighth H grade because based on the result of interview with the English teacher and the result of preliminary study, the students score in reading was still low. To solve those problems the researcher uses Five W’s Stars Diagram technique. The formulation of the researcher problem was: “How can Five W’S Stars Diagram improve the students’ ability in reading narrative text? The purpose of this study was: To improve students’ ability in reading by using Five W’S stars diagram in narrative text. The design of the research was Classroom Action Research based on the model Kemmis & Mc. Taggart model. . The subject of the study comprised 31 students from the Eighth Grade H SMPN 1 Sumbergempol in the Academic Year 2015/2016. In the study, the researcher could achieve the criteria success in two cycles. In two cycles comprising four meetings in each cycle. Carried out in four steps namely; planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. At the end of each cycle, evaluation test was conducted to know the improvement of students’ ability in reading narrative text. The research instrument was test data collection, interview with the English teacher, observation sheet, and questionnaire and field notes. The result showed that the use of Five W’s Stars Diagram technique could improve the students’ skills in reading, and the achievement of the criteria of success improvement was indicated by the achievement of the students’ reading scores. In preliminary test, there were 12 students or 48, 38% who meet the criteria of success. While in the cycle 1, there were 14 students or 72 % who meet the criteria of success. And the cycle 2 there were 26 students or 85, 48% who meet the criteria of success. The result of questionnaire also showed positive responses from the students. Based on the findings described above, it was concluded that the use of the Five W’s Stars Diagram was successful to improve the students’ ability in reading skills and the implementation of Five W’s Stars Diagram got positive personal judgments from the students. Based on the result, the researcher suggests several things. For the English teachers, the writer suggests to use this strategy as alternative way in teaching reading to help the students to improve their reading. Last, for future researchers, she suggests that this strategy will be useful for the future researcher as the reference to make a further research, especially to improve the students’ reading.
