Abstract
Vocabulary is the most important part in language learning, vocabulary is a core component of language proficiency and provides much of the basis for how learners speak, listen, read and write. In fact, teaching vocabulary is not easy for students. Teaching English vocabulary needs an appropriate technique which is suitable with the students’ characteristics. Therefore, teacher must be creative and clever in choosing media that can motivate student in learning. One of the media that can help student is Scrabble application. Scrabble is a simple game that can help the teacher in teaching vocabulary especially in memorizing, spelling and understanding the meaning of the words. This study was conducted to find out the effectiveness of using scrabble application on students’ vocabulary achievement of the second year students at SMPN 1 Campurdarat Tulungagung. The formulation of this research problem is: is there any effectiveness of using Scrabble Application on students’ vocabulary achievement of the second year students at SMPN 1 Campurdarat. Based on formulation of research problem, the purpose of this study is to find evidence whether using scrabble application is effective or not on the student’ vocabulary achievement at SPMN 1 Campurdarat. This research uses quantitative research with pre-exprerimental method. The population used is all students of seconde-grade at SMPN 1 Campurdarat. The study uses convenience sampling and gets a sample of class VIII B which consists of 34 students. To collect data, researcher used a test, namely pre-test and post-test. This study was analyzed using the Wilcoxon test with SPSS 25. The findings showed significant differences between the result of pre-test and post-test. The average score on the pre-test (47.80) is lower than the average score on the post-test (62,20). It means that there is difference score on the student’s vocabulary achievement. From the calculation, of the Wilcoxon test showed that the significant value is 0.00 and it is lower than 0.05 (0.00<0.05). It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (h0) is rejected. It could be conclude, that there is effectiveness of using scrabble application on students’ vocabulary achievement before and after treatment. In addition, the use of scrabble application can be used as an alternative media in teaching vocabulary.
