Abstract

The existence of English in Indonesia as a foreign language makes the existence of language foundation is very important. The English foundation itself consists of speaking, listening, reading and writing. These four language foundations can be mastered by a language learner supported by the ability to master language component, they are grammar and vocabulary mastery. Therefore, the skills will be difficult to achieve if the use of grammar especially tenses cannot be mastered because tenses are a supporting element for mastery of learning English, especially in writing and speaking skills. Learning tenses that are difficult perhaps it's best to use fun methods for children, one of which is by singing. A suitable method for this is the learning method using Musical Mnemonics. This study aimed to determine whether musical mnemonic method were effective in teaching grammar at the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Prambon. To address this, the research question was formulated as follows “Is musical mnemonic method effective in teaching grammar at the eighth grade students of SMPN 1Prambon?”. The objective of this study is to determine the impact of musical mnemonic method in teaching grammar. It employs a quantitative approach with data analysis techniques using quasi experimental design. Data collection is conducted through grammar test, and IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0 is utilized for analysis. Non-probability sampling, specifically purposive sampling, is used for sample selection. The sample consists of 72 eighth grade at SMPN 1 Prambon. The results indicate that hypothesis analysis, it can be concluded that musical mnemonic was effective to use and this was evidenced by the statistically significant difference scores obtained before and after using musical mnemonic method. the result of statistical conclusion using based on independent sample t-test data analysis proved (Ha) is accepted and (Ho) is rejected. It can be seen the statistical significance is shown by the analyzed post-test data result was sig(2-tailed) is 0.000 that is lower than α = 0.05 (5%). Therefore, it is proved that the using musical mnemonic method is effective in teaching grammar at the eight grade students of SMPN 1 Prambon.
