Abstract

Language style emerged as one of the subfields of sociolinguistics that focuses on the way a person speaks based on the formality scale of their social life. This research is aimed to analyze language style used in the main characters, Willy Wonka and Charlie Bucket in “Charlie and Chocolate Factory” (2005) movie. The main character's utterances in speaking attracted the researcher's attention. The formulation of this research problems are, (1) what are the language styles found in the movie ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’? (2) what the meanings are sentences found in research question 1? This research was conducted using a library research design with a qualitative approach. The data collection technique by watching the movie then finding out the utterances that contains language style. This analysis was based on the five language styles proposed in Martin Joos’s theory. The data in this study were taken from the dialogue of the movie that was transcribed into textual form. The data verification used triangulation. An expert was involved in this to validate the data analysis. The results of this study found 221 data analyses. (1) There are 3 data belonging to the frozen language style, 84 data of formal language style, 36 data of consultative language style, 80 data of casual language style, and 18 data of intimate language style. Formal style is the most widely used, supporting 84 data because conversations often occur in formal situations. There are some barriers in social status but it is not seen as an obstacle to having a conversation. (2) The data found from the sentence meanings of the main characters' (Charlie Bucket and Willy Wonka) utterances show that there are 4 life lessons to be learnt. They are hard work pays off, be creative and imaginative, humility is the key, embrace your inner child. Keywords: Language Style, Movie, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory
