Abstract

QuillBot is an artificial intelligence technology students use in writing, especially academic writing. This tool is an online application to paraphrase writing, avoid plagiarism, summarize long sentences, improve grammar, and translate some texts to be more professional. Academic writing is a complex activity and has a high level of difficulty. A plethora of studies have been conducted on academic writing difficulties in higher education, with the advancement of technology, the challenges of academic writing can be relieved by using QuillBot. The study aims to investigate the students' perception of using QuillBot as an AI-based writing assistant among English Education Department students in the sixth semester at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. This research will determine students' perceptions regarding using QuillBot as an AI-based assistant in academic writing, which can show the benefit of saving time and quickly paraphrasing English sentences. This study employed a phenomenological research design to explore the students experiences and perceptions regarding the use of QuillBot. It enrolled 56 English Education Department students in the sixth semester who were already familiar with QuillBot to participate. Then, 10 students were selected again for face-to-face interviews who were purposefully selected based on their responses to the statements in the questionnaire. The instruments used in this study were a questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The researcher used questionnaire as a supporting instrument to selected10 informants for semi-structured interview. The questionnaire consisted of 26 valid statements and the interview consisted of 10 valid questions. The results showed that students had a positive perception of the use of QuillBot in improving their writing skills and quality and found the advantages of QuillBot, they are completely satisfied with the features provided by QuillBot. The majority of students state that they are agreed that QuillBot usage was beneficial on their academic whether writing research papers, articles, journals, or learning texts. The features of QuillBot are useful and easy to use, such as paraphrasing sentences, finding grammar and punctuation errors, summarising, translating, and citation generation, even though they only use the free version. This study indicates that AI-powered technologies such as QuillBot in writing, particularly in academic writing, plays a significant role in providing quality writing for students.
