Abstract
Hidayah, Waqiatun Nurul. 2024. The Correlation Between The Students’ Personalities And Their English Speaking Performance At SMPN 02 Kademang. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. The State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor Dr. Nany Soengkono Madayani, S.S., M.Pd Keywords: Correlation, Speaking Performance, Extrovert, Introvert Speaking is an oral communication skill that calls for the capacity to use the language effectively in social interactions, where gesture, body language, and expression are all used in addition to verbal communication. Speaking is very important to communicate, especially speaking English is very important to learn. Learning English itself can be said to be difficult depending on the personality of the student. Sometimes students who have an extroverted nature find it easier to communicate with other people than students who have an introverted nature. However, this still does not determine their ability to speak English in public. In this study, introverted students were characterized by scores ranging between 0-11, while extrovert students were characterized by scores ranging from 12-24. This research focuses on the correlation between students' English speaking abilities and their extrovert-introvert personalities. The purpose of this research is to find out whether there is a significant correlation between the students’ personalities extroverted-introverted and their English speaking performance of Grade 8 at SMPN 02 Kademangan. This research uses a quantitative approach and this type of research is Correlational. There were 31 students as samples selected using Non probability sampling techniques. In collecting data, researchers distributed questionnaires to respondents to determine extrovert and introvert students, which consisted of 24 statement items arranged based on extrovert and introvert indicators and questions adopted from the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. Then, the researcher used an oral test to determine the students' speaking performance. Researchers used the Pearson Product Moment Correlation test via SPSS version 25.00 to analyze the data. The average score Extrovert students speaking performance is (77.50). Introverted student is (76.47) that means the average score is good category. Then, the results of the Pearson Product Moment Correlation test found that the the sig value (2-tailed) being 0.635 bigger than 0.05 Pearson Correlation Coefficient: -0.089 this shows that there is a very weak negative correlation between the Personality Extrovert-Introvert students’ and their Speaking Performance, which means there was no significant difference statistically. The null hypothesis is accepted while the alternative hypothesis is rejected. In conclusion, there is no significant correlation between the English speaking performance and their personalities extrovertintrovert
