Abstract

A thesis entitled “The Correlation among Learning Styles, Learning Motivation, Writing Performance of Undergraduate EFL Learners” written by Syahwa Adiratna Nur Annisa Zuhri with advisors Dr. Susanto, S.S., M. Pd. and Dr. Sukarsono, M. Pd. Keywords: Learning styles, learning motivation, writing performance, undergraduate EFL learners Due to modern demands and technological advancements, learning the English language is an essential element of everyday life for humans. In this case, there are some factors that support learning language includes learning style, gender, learning motivation and so on. Thus, learning style and learning motivation are the two factors contribute to the success of writing mastery. Referring to this result, the researcher aimed to investigate whether learning styles and learning motivation were considered the keys to students’ success in writing performance as undergraduate EFL learners. The formulation of the research questions: Is there any correlation among the learning style, learning motivation, and writing performance of undergraduate EFL learners? The objective of this research is to observe whether: There is a correlation among the learning style, learning motivation, and writing performance of undergraduate EFL learners. The researcher used a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. The variables included predictor variables (learning style and learning motivation) and criterion variable (writing performance). The population of this research was all fifth-semester undergraduate students of the English language education department at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The total number of samples was 158 students with consideration of the highest level and quality of writing performance. An online questionnaire via Google Forms was used to gain data on the students’ learning styles and their learning motivations. The data on the students’ writing performance was gained from their writing documentation of creative writing on short story project via Google Drive. To analyze the data, Spearman Correlation Coefficient and Multinominal Logistic Regression through the SPSS 26.0 program were utilized. The SPSS output suggested that there is a correlation among learning styles, learning motivation, and writing performance of undergraduate EFL learners in a positive and low correlation. Regarding to the result of this research, English lecturer need to expose students to frequently do writing activities. The students should focus their motivation on learning English while implementing a suitable learning method in writing class in order to achieve better outcomes in writing performance. In a nutshell, creative writing as one writing genre of English language skills covers the complex components and processes. Those points highlighting the core of this study that there is a low correlation among students’ learning styles, learning motivation, and their writing performance of undergraduate EFL learners.
