Abstract

For students of English as foreign language learners, vocabulary has a significant role. Vocabulary is the study of words or meanings of words. Vocabulary is the important part of the language. Moreover, Junior High School students still have problems related to vocabulary mastery which in turn affect their confidence in reading. Implementing extensive reading is one of the ways to gain vocabulary mastery. Improving students vocabulary mastery encourages active learning, extensive reading promotes self- directed learning, allowing students to explore new words independently and at their own space. When EFL students read extensively, students become fluent readers, and EFL students increase their vocabulary, and become better writers. The formulation of the research problem of this research were “ How to improve student vocabulary mastery by using extensive reading at eight grade of MTsN 2 Trenggalek?” This study was carried out to improve the students vocabulary mastery by using extensive reading in the second year of MTsN 2 Trenggalek in academic year 2024/2025. The subject of this study were consisted of 30 students. The method used in this study was classroom action research. It meant that the writer collaborated with the English teacher of MTsN 2 Trenggalek as an observer and collaborator. This study was conducted following Kemmis and Mc Taggart model with the following procedures of the action research: planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The study was carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings. The data were gathered in this study through interview, classroom observation, and test. The findings result of the study showed that there was improvement of students vocabulary mastery. Most of students gradually gained good scores at the end of each cycle.the score of Minimum Mastery CriterionKriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM) of English lesson was 75 (seventy five). The students mean score in the first cycle was 67,5. The students mean score in second cycle was 79. In addition , there was a positive response from the English teacher about implementing the action. In conclusion using Extensive Reading could improve students vocabulary mastery. It can be conclude that there is any significant difference of the students’ vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by using Extensive Reading at the eight grade students of MTsN 2 Trenggalek
