Abstract

Reading is an important skill taught from elementary school until senior high school in Indonesia, but it has not yet become the main focus in English language education. Many students have difficulty understanding texts, especially in English. To improve students' reading skills, the use of interactive and engaging media such as manhwa is a potential alternative. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the English manhwa entitled "To Be an Actor," in improving the reading comprehension skills of eighth-grade students at SMPN 2 Gondang Tulungagung. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental research design. The population that used is eight grade students in SMPN 2 Gondang Tulungagung, and employing purposive sampling technique to choose the sample. There were two groups with total 22 students in each class in this study: an experimental group (VIII B) that was taught using the English manhwa entitled "To Be an Actor" and a control group (VIII A) that used conventional learning methods. This study involves collecting data through pre-test and post-test in both groups to assess the improvement of reading comprehension. Thus, the effectiveness of using manhwa as a learning medium was evaluated through a comparison of the scores of the two groups using parametric testing with SPSS 30 programs. The results showed that students who were taught using manhwa experienced a significant increase in reading comprehension scores compared to the control group. Data analysis showed a significance value (Sig.) of 0.001 < 0.05, which indicates that the use of the English manhwa entitled "To Be an Actor" has a positive effect on students' reading skills. This indicates that media such as manhwa can motivate students in reading as well as improve their understanding of English texts. So, pedagogically it can be applied in learning reading comprehension.
