Abstract
English is an increasingly important global language in the academic and professional world. However, many students in Indonesia struggle to master English speaking skills, even though there is learning in every class. This phenomenon has encouraged the emergence of various non-formal education, such as the Effective English Conversation Course (EECC) in Pare which integrates innovative methods such as weekly speech contest for public speaking skills and students' confidence. This study examines the implementation of speech contest in weekly meetings as a method to provide training on public speaking skills in English learning. This study aims to analyze the process of preparation, implementation, and evaluation of the speech contest, which is held as part of the weekly meeting program, and the assessment of students' speaking skills and confidence in public speaking. The findings revealed that the preparatory phase was structured, including curriculum planning that did not follow formal institutions, the introduction of basic public speaking techniques, and the selection of relevant themes on the speech contest program. The implementation phase, which is managed by tutors, incorporates supporting methods such as technical guidance, feedback, and strategies for managing public speaking anxiety, all of which have been found to make students' comfort and ease of delivering speeches. In addition, in this evaluation process the tutors focus on assessing pronunciation, structure, and fluency, in addition to providing constructive feedback and recognition of outstanding performance to motivate students. This study concluded that the speech contest method applied every week at EECC Pare develops technical speaking skills, increases vocabulary, fosters students' confidence and skills to engage in public communication. These findings suggest that integrating regular public speaking activities, such as speech contests, can be beneficial for English language learners in non-formal educational settings. Future studies may further explore the long-term impact of consistent speech contest practices on students' language proficiency and their perception of English as a public communication medium.
