Abstract

Dewi, Shela Nahari Putriana. NIM: 126203202172. 2024. The Effectiveness and Students’ Interest of Using Georgiana’s Podcast of Spotify Application in EFL Listening Class at the First Semester Students of UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah State Islamic University (UIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Arpinda Syifa’a Awalin, S.Pd., M.Pd. Keywords: listening skills, Spotify, podcast. From time to time, the ability to listen effectively becomes a major issue that needs attention because listening is the basis of language acquisition to communicate well. Unfortunately, it is normal for students to experience difficulties in listening because listening to English is not the same as listening to a frequently spoken language, especially if English is not the student's native language. In addition, voice or spoken conversations cannot be heard at a slower speed unless we ask for it, making it impossible for listeners to adjust messages to their capacity to capture information from what they hear. As a result, they are unable to understand the sound correctly. Over time, the development of media is increasingly rapid, especially among young people, such as podcasts that have been available in any application, as well as Spotify which is often accessed by young people. This study aimed to determine whether listening to Georgiana's podcast on the Spotify application can effectively improve the listening skills of students majoring in English Education in learning listening comprehension and rating students' interest in using this media. Therefore, this study aimed to see the effectiveness of listening to Georgiana's podcast on the Spotify application for English Education students, especially for first-semester students of UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, and see if there was a significant difference between students when before and after being given treatment. The research method used was quantitative with a pre-experimental research design. The tests used for data collection were pre-test and post-test. The sampling technique in this study used random sampling by taking one class called the experimental class. Pre-test and post-test were conducted in the experimental class, and the mean of the pre-test was 42.76, then the researcher gave 3 treatments for 3 weeks by scoring rubric of listening with aspects of comprehension, general understanding, listening for details, and accuracy of answers. This study's results showed that listening to Georgina's podcast on the Spotify application was effective in learning English in the LLC (Literal Listening Comprehension) course class. This can be seen from the difference in the mean score of the students' pre-test conducted before the treatment and the student’ post-test after the treatment in the experimental class. After undergoing treatment for 3, the post-test results were increased with a mean of 63,85. The results of the statistically significant calculation (2 -tailed) from the Paired Sample T-Test and the test results were found to be the Sig. value of 0.000 which means it was less than 0,05. This can be concluded that the implementation of listening to Georgiana’s podcast on the Spotify application is effective in improving students’ listening skills.
