Abstract
Speaking ability is a fundamental skill in language acquisition, facilitating successful communication and the fluent expression of concepts. The Role Play Method is an effective approach to improve students' scores of speaking abilities, offering a dynamic and engaging learning environment. This study is to evaluate the effectiveness of using Role Play Method on the speaking ability of eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Sanankulon Blitar during the Academic Year 2024/2025. This study utilized a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design consisting of a one-group pre-test and post-test. The sample comprised 26 students from class VIII-B that obtained from selected by using purposive sampling and recommendation from a teacher who oversaw that the class have an equal distribution of speaking abilities, which is suits with the study. The instrument employed was an oral speaking exam, conducted before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the role-play intervention. The data, which included the students' speaking scores, were obtained from the pre-test and post-test. A T-test was conducted with the help of SPSS 27 to determine the statistical calculations. The results of the statistical calculations showed the average score of the pre-test was 49.23, but the average score of the post-test rose to 74.15. The paired sample T-test findings revealed a significance value (Sig. 2- tailed) of 0.000, which is below 0.05. This indicates the rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) and the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). The findings indicate that the Role Play Method markedly enhances students' speaking proficiency. The data indicate that the Role Play Method is an effective strategy for improving students' speaking ability. This approach is advisable for English educators as an interactive strategy to foster active student engagement and enhance fluency, pronunciation, and confidence in speaking. Future researchers are advised to enhance the study by using a bigger sample size, a control group, and an extended treatment duration to better substantiate these findings.
