Abstract

Sari Puspita Ririn. Students Registered Number, 126203212120, 2025. Exploring Students’ Perception of ChatGPT in Improving Writing Skills Among 4th Semester Students of English Departmen in UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor Lailatul Nikmah, M. Pd. Keywords: ChatGPT, student perception, writing skills, creative writing (short fiction) Writing is a crucial aspect of English language learning, especially for students who are engaged in creative writing. However, many students still struggle with writing short fiction stories, particularly in generating ideas, developing plotlines, constructing characters, and correcting grammatical errors. With the advancement of technology, students can now utilize AI-based tools such as ChatGPT to support their writing process. ChatGPT can assist in generating ideas, organizing plots, enriching vocabulary, and providing instant feedback. This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of using ChatGPT in enhancing writing skills, particularly in writing creative short fiction stories. This research employed a descriptive quantitative approach with a survey design. The population consisted of all fourth-semester students of the English Education Department at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung who were enrolled in the Creative Writing course. A sample of 50 students was selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale consisting of 30 statements. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with the assistance of SPSS 27. The results revealed that the majority of students had a positive perception of using ChatGPT to assist in the writing process of short fiction stories. The mean score for the general perception indicator was 4.36, indicating a very positive attitude. Meanwhile, the indicator for the benefits of using ChatGPT obtained a mean score of 4.24, suggesting that students felt supported in improving the efficiency and quality of their writing. However, the indicator of challenges in using ChatGPT received an average score of 2.66, indicating that students are also aware of ChatGPT’s limitations, such as the potential for excessive dependency and concerns about a decline in creativity and originality in writing. Thus, this study concludes that despite several challenges, ChatGPT is still considered an effective tool in supporting creative writing learning among university students
