Abstract

Thesis entitled “The Correlation Between Intrinsic Motivation and English Reading Performance of the Ninth Grade Students in MTs Ma'arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar” Written by Halwa Yunia Putri, 126203213192. Supervisor: Anindita Badianti, S.Pd, M.Pd. Keywords: intrinsic motivation, reading performance, English, junior high school students, correlation. This study aims to determine the relationship between intrinsic motivation and English reading performance of ninth grade students of MTs Ma'arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar. The background of this study is the low reading ability of students in English subjects which is a challenge in language learning at the junior high school level. One of the internal factors believed to influence reading performance is intrinsic motivation, which is the drive to learn that comes from within students such as pleasure, interest, and personal satisfaction when reading. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The instruments used include an intrinsic motivation questionnaire adapted from the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory and a multiple-choice reading test arranged based on literal, inferential, and critical aspects. The total population consisted of 315 ninth grade students, from which a sample of 35 students was selected using purposive sampling. Data were obtained from these 35 students and analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques and Pearson correlation tests with the help of the SPSS version 22 program. The results showed that most students had moderate levels of intrinsic motivation, and their reading ability was mostly in the very low category. Correlation analysis shows a positive and significant relationship between intrinsic motivation and English reading ability with a value of r = 0.446 and a significance of 0.007 (p < 0.05). This results indicates that the higher the intrinsic motivation of students, the better their English reading ability. Therefore, it is important for educators and schools to develop learning strategies that can foster and strengthen students' intrinsic motivation. A learning approach that is fun, relevant to students' interests, and provides space for independent learning can be an effective step in increasing students' intrinsic motivation, which ultimately has a positive impact on their reading ability.
